What is the actual status of “Shrek 5“? The film is in the making and “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish” has brought us a lot closer to the new Shrek donkey adventure!

Currently, “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish” is in theaters and enjoying outstanding reviews. In the process, the film serves as a door opener for “Shrek 5.” Already in the trailer, “Puss in Boots 2” was advertised as “A new adventure from the fairy tale world of Shrek” and in the film itself the announcements continue!
The fact that already in the trailer “Shrek” was brought out of the woodwork again, foreshadowed progress in relation to “Shrek 5”. After all, the last film “Forever Shrek” was released over 10 years ago. Puss in Boots outlasted the time with some Netflix productions and accordingly would not have needed to refer to Shrek at all.
In “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish” then Pfeffi the Gingerbread Man and Pinocchio make guest appearances. Donkey and Shrek himself are also seen briefly, although not heard. The end of the film then leaves no room for doubt: Kater, Kitty and Perrito travel to the kingdom of Weit Weit Weg to meet “old friends”.
Far Far Away, for those who have forgotten Shrek a bit by now, is the kingdom where Shrek’s wife Fiona comes from. Antonio Banderas, who voices Puss in Boots in the English-language original, has also elaborated on how “Shrek 5” is doing.
“I’ve done five movies now [Shrek 2, 3 and 4, and Puss in Boots 1 & 2]. There’s probably one more, and [Shrek] is probably coming back,” the star revealed in an interview with U.S. magazine Deadline (via Screen Rant).
Rumors that “Shrek 5” is coming have been coming up again and again for several years now. The film is probably also in production at Dreamworks, but we have never been as close to the film as we are now!
Shrek 5: What could it be about?
“Forever Shrek,” the last “Shrek” movie, opened in theaters in 2010. That was over ten years ago. It’s unlikely that today’s target audience for the family-friendly animated film knows all of the “Shrek” movies, or any of them for that matter. It is therefore highly likely that “Shrek 5” will be a soft reboot.
This means that the film will not feature new characters and dubbing actors, but at least in terms of the plot it will work on its own to such an extent that a viewing of the first four films is not necessary. It was a similar story with Puss in Boots 2.
Shrek 5: Is there already a script?
There is said to be a “Shrek 5” script already for several years, which comes from Michael McCullers (“Boss Baby”). He did not reveal a story yet. Even if his script stands, we can assume that it will certainly have to be adapted again, since the creative team behind the scenes has changed a lot over the years at Dreamworks.
