Squid Game Season 2 Release Date: When will it start?
As “Variety” reports, Netflix has officially renewed the 2nd season of “Squid Game”. According to content chief Ted Sarandos, “the Squid Game universe has just begun.”
In advance, “Just Jared” had already reported that a Squid Game sequel was in the books. Director Hwang Dong-hyuk is also said to be back on board. In an interview with “Variety” he had first put a damper on many fans:
“I don’t have any widely developed plans for ‘Squid Game 2.’ It’s pretty tiring just thinking about it. But if I were to do it, I definitely wouldn’t do it alone. I would consider a Writer’s Room and use several experienced directors.”
Now, however, he seems to have reconsidered. During an interview at an event, he reportedly said:
“So there was so much pressure, so much demand and so much love for a second season. So I almost feel like we’re not being given a choice. I just want to say that there will indeed be a second season. I already have it in my mind. I’m in the planning stages right now. But I think it’s too early to say when and how that will happen.”
Meanwhile, a start date has yet to be set, but Hwang Dong-hyuk told “Vanity Fair” that he does not expect a release until 2023 to 2024.

Squid Game Season 2 Plot: What’s next?
For the Squid Game Season 2, we see two directions in which the series could develop.
It would be possible to repeat the concept of season 1 with a new cast. However, the production team would have to develop a special spin to keep the concept from becoming boring and predictable. This option seems the least likely to us because season 1 ends with a clear cliffhanger.
The second option is the hunt for those responsible: Here, the hunters* become the hunted after Gi-Hun decides to declare war on the VIPs and the front man.
If director Hwang Dong-hyuk has his way, it will come down to another third option in season 2. In a sequel, he would like to focus on the story of frontman In-ho and further elaborate on his relationship with his dead brother Jun-ho.
Also, in his opinion, there should be a reunion with Gi-Hun in Squid Game Season 2. After the end of season 1, that’s not surprising. Lastly, the recruiter, who has been little fleshed out so far, is an exciting character for him to flesh out further, as Hwang Dong-hyuk revealed in an interview with “The Hollywood Reporter.”
Squid Game Season 2 Cast: Who will be in?
Meanwhile, two characters have been confirmed for the 2nd season of “Squid Game.” As series creator Hwang Dong-hyuk shared, we will see both winner Gi-Hun (Lee Jung-Jae) and frontman In-Ho (Lee Byung-hun) again in the new episodes. This supports our theories about the plot of the second season.
Besides that, there will probably be all kinds of new faces to see because the survivors from season 1 of “Squid Game” can be counted on one hand. More details about the new cast members are not yet known.
