John Wick 4, it’s one thing with surprise hits that revive a genre thought to be dead and/or offer a completely new viewing pleasure: everyone wants more of them – until at some point it becomes too much. The number of possible sequels and spin-offs is finite.
Surprise hits that revive a genre that was thought to be dead and/or offer a completely new viewing pleasure are one of those things: everyone wants more of them – until at some point it becomes too much. The number of possible sequels and spin-offs is finite. If you miss the right moment for the exit, every film series, no matter how successful and beloved, comes to an inglorious end, see the “Nightmare on Elm Street”, “Terminator” and “Transformers” films.
There’s a reason there’s no “Taken 4” with Liam Neeson. Audience favorite Keanu Reeves, on the other hand, will return for the third time as super killer John Wick on March 23, 2023: “John Wick 4” is even just the beginning. It was recently announced that the 57-year-old will also appear in the spin-off “Ballerina”; “John Wick 5” is also firmly scheduled. If it were up to those responsible, Reeves could play John Wick for the rest of his life, as long as he feels the desire to do so. In the process, the actor is inevitably approaching 60. Will he be Liam Neeson’s successor in the geriaction genre, i.e. in the grandpa action?
This fear is (hopefully still) completely unfounded, even if “John Wick: Chapter 3” revealed the first signs of fatigue due to the nature of the overkill. To find back to old strength, director Chad Stahelski has with Scott Adkins (“The Expendables 2”) and especially Donnie Yen (“Rogue One: A Star Wars Story”) two absolute action stars and martial artists brought on board, which should spice up the gun-fu with proper kicks. And as the just released new trailer demonstrates, this has an effect – and how:
John Wick 4: A blood feud on a global scale
John Wick (Keanu Reeves) survived the High Chamber’s manhunt for him in “John Wick: Chapter 3” – how could it be otherwise? But the bounty on his head soars to immeasurable heights. So the indomitable super killer takes flight and confronts the high-ranking members of the High Chamber all over the world: from Berlin to Paris and New York to Osaka. They must all die – all who seek his life, all who betray him, and all who stand in his way. For John Wick wants to wipe out the underworld altogether: Man by man, woman by woman.
As it seems, the bond between Winston (Ian McShane) and John Wick has not yet been completely severed. So in truth, his old friend did save his life – just in an unconventional way. And it turns out that the super killer has influential family members in the High Chamber. There is a way out of this death spiral for John Wick, but it’s soaked in blood.
This promises a true action fest of superlatives, which is also reflected in the trailer. One action set piece chases the next and the pace probably stays high throughout. That’s saying something, because “John Wick 4” is also supposed to be the longest film in the series. But the question remains, what will come after that? Part 5 is set, so will there be an unnecessary cliffhanger in “John Wick 4”? Here’s hoping that the overarching plot for the fifth installment won’t merely be to finish off the rest of the High Chamber.
In addition to Keanu Reeves, Laurence Fishburne, Ian McShane, Lance Reddick and Donnie Yen, the film also stars Bill Skarsgård, Hiroyuki Sanada, Rina Sawayama, Shamier Anderson, Scott Adkins, Clancy Brown, Natalia Tena and Aimée Kwan.
John Wick Plot and background
Keanu Reeves returns to his signature role of recent years. As John Wick, he has already put a stop to countless opponents, taken revenge for the death of his dog in the first part, defied the rules of the contract killers in “John Wick 2” and finally had to restore his good reputation in “John Wick 3”.
