“Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” represents the emotional farewell to the colorful superhero squad. It gets even more emotional with Groot’s final words, as James Gunn reveals.
- The tree alien Groot is known for being able to communicate only with the phrase “I am Groot.”
- However, after the emotional finale of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, things are different.
- One theory explains why that is, and James Gunn confirms it.

“Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” is an emotional film not only because of the story, but also because it’s the last time the superhero squad as we know them will adventure together. In saying goodbye, Groot takes on a very special role in Marvel’s hit film, because for the first time he doesn’t just say “I am Groot.”
After defeating the film’s villain, High Evolutionary (Chukwudi Iwuji), the group comes together one last time in a quiet moment to go their separate ways and leave the Guardians behind. Before there’s a group hug, Groot finds the right words with “I love you guys.” But why can the tree alien suddenly say more than “I am Groot”?
In an article from Gizmodo, a theory was put forward about this. It says that Groot’s language cannot be learned easily. Only when a connection to him has been established, it becomes clear what “I am Groot” actually means.
This was also made clear by Gamora (Zoe Saldaña). Since the current Gamora, because of the events of “Avengers: Endgame,” has no relationship with the group, she also, unlike her deceased self, cannot understand Groot. This is made clear during “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.” However, after the adventure they went on together, she can respond to Groot’s sentences without a translator.
According to the theory, after three Guardians of the Galaxy adventures, viewers are in a similar position as Gamora. Groot, like the other team members, has become a bit of family to the audience. According to this, Groot says “I love you guys” in his language and we are now able to understand him as well.
In response to a question from a Twitter user, director James Gunn confirmed the theory. The farewell is thus given an even more emotional touch and involves the viewers.
Perhaps a reason to watch “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” one more time in theaters before its release on Disney+. The film was only released on May 3 and should run for a few more weeks due to its success.
