With “Bridgerton,” Netflix created a new series universe in 2020 that should have paid off for the platform. Millions of people watched the drama series about the London ball season and the children of the Bridgerton family – especially daughter Daphne.
With the 2nd season, son Anthony Bridgerton has moved into the center of attention. For him, too, it was a matter of getting married in the new episodes. After him, however, a whole series of siblings are waiting to be married. And so it’s no wonder that fans of the series want to know as soon as possible when a 3rd season of “Bridgerton” will continue.
We try to answer the most pressing questions about a continuation of “Bridgerton” below. We also have an overview of the cast, the possible plot and already released trailers for season 3.
Spoiler warning: In the following text, we go into the previous events of the historical drama “Bridgerton”. In addition, the article may already anticipate plots of the 3rd season. If you want to watch the series spoiler-free, you should read this article only after the last episode of season 2. Instead, we recommend taking a look at the current Netflix news until then.
Bridgerton Season 3: Release date
Currently, the information about the 3rd season of “Bridgerton” unfortunately still looks very scanty. We only know that seasons 3 and 4, as well as a spinoff around Queen Charlotte, is in the books.
However, Netflix has not yet announced a release date. It has also remained silent about the start of filming for the new episodes.
However, we are hopeful that it will not be long before the latter is announced.
We expect a shorter waiting time for the release than for season 2, because we don’t expect any delays due to a worldwide pandemic this time. It could be as early as 2023 when new episodes of “Bridgerton” are waiting for us on Netflix.
Bridgerton Season 3: What happens next?
So far, “Bridgerton” has always made our job easier for this part of the article. This is because the first two books were more or less stuck to the book by author Julia Quinn. With season 3, however, they will deviate from the order of the books.
Because while in the 3rd novel part “How to Seduce a Lord?” Benedict Bridgerton is the focus; season 3 of the series will deal primarily with his brother Colin and Penelope Featherington, also known to fans as “Lady Whistledown.” Penelope actress Nicola Coughlan confirmed this during a Netflix panel:
“Like Lady Whistledown, I’ve carried a secret for a long time, but now I can confirm that season three will be Colin and Penelope’s love story.”
Showrunner Jess Brownell provides a rationale for the deviation from the novel to Variety:
“I really feel like now is Colin and Penelope’s time. Because we’ve seen these two actors on our screens since season one, we’ve already built a certain relationship with them. We know who they are as people. I feel like, especially last season, there were these moments of tension between them where Colin almost realizes that Penelope has feelings for him but doesn’t quite make it. Instead of letting that dynamic sit there, we want to build on it in their season.”
Anthony actor Jonathan Bailey, on the other hand, would have liked a different main character. In an interview with “E! News,” he revealed that he couldn’t wait for Eloise’s romance:
“I can’t wait to walk Eloise down the aisle, and for a lot of reasons. If there’s ever going to be another character that has a bigger arc than Anthony in terms of overcoming a psychological conflict, it’s Eloise.”
Bridgerton Season 3: Cast
The focus of Season 3 of “Bridgerton” is, of course, Colin Bridgerton and Penelope Featherington, played by Luke Newton and Nicola Coughlan. We expect most of the other “Bridgerton” family members to return with the same cast. These are:
- Ruth Gemmell as Lady Violet Bridgerton
- Luke Thompson as Benedict Bridgerton
- Claudia Jessie as Eloise Bridgerton
- Will Tilston as Gregory Bridgerton
- Florence Hunt as Hyacinth Bridgerton
- Jonathan Bailey as Anthoney Bridgerton
- Phoebe Dynevor as Daphne Bridgerton
A reunion with Prudence Featherington (Bessie Carter), Lady Danbury (Adjoa Andoh) and Queen Charlotte (Golda Rosheuvel) is also expected.
No longer in the cast is Ruby Stokes as Francesca Bridgerton. The actress is apparently well plugged in with the Netflix original “Lockwood & Co.” Instead, actress Hannah Dodd (“Anatomy of a Scandal”) will fill the role of Bridgerton’s sister in the future. This should give Francesca a more significant role in Season 3 than in previous episodes.
Rumors that Regé-Jean Page would reappear as Simon Basset, Duke of Hastings, in the upcoming season were denied by the actor on Instagram: “No, I’m not returning to series – the magazines made that up.”
How many seasons does Bridgerton have?
If “Bridgerton” continues to be as successful as it was after seasons 1 and 2, we can expect many more episodes.
After all, there is plenty of book material to draw on. Currently, eight novels about the Bridgertons have been published. Each of them could be adapted into a season of its own.
In addition, at least one spinoff in the works that deals with Queen Charlotte and her path to the throne.
