Black Knight season 2 has not been announced yet. Does the South Korean Netflix hit have a chance at a sequel? Here’s how it could continue.
With the dystopian science fiction series “Black Knight” (not to be confused with the Marvel character of the same name, who was teased in the end credits scene of “Eternals”), an action-packed production started streaming on Netflix on May 12, 2023, which made it straight into the Netflix top 10 at launch and seemed to have the potential to be the next big series highlight from South Korea.
In the dystopian future of 2071, the survival of humanity in a world destroyed by air pollution depends on the courageous oxygen couriers of the Black Knights. In the process, the legendary courier named 5-8 not only fights for survival with his extraordinary abilities and against the corrupt world order. Find out here whether the series has a chance of survival after the six episodes of the first season and whether there is hope for a continuation in the form of season 2.
The full range of series, including Netflix with Korean series highlights like “Squid Game“, is available with the Sky Entertainment Plus package:
Black Knight Season 2: What about a sequel?
Since the first season of “Black Knight” just launched on Netflix, it’s not surprising that nothing is known about season 2 so far. With six episodes, the production also counts as a miniseries, which rarely go beyond one season. Since many South Korean series formats are designed for only one season, it is likely that a sequel to “Black Knight” was never planned.
That being said, a renewal depends largely on the series’ streaming success on Netflix, with the first few weeks, in particular, being crucial. However, the ranking among the top 10 shortly after the start is a good sign. So far, “Black Knight” seems to be well received and to meet the high expectations. After all, the new dystopian sci-fi action was already traded as a potential successor to “Squid Game” before its launch. The successful series was also initially not to be continued, but its groundbreaking success ensured that a second season was confirmed. So, if “Black Knight” continues to gain popularity and stream well, there should be hope for a continuation and season 2 could still be confirmed. If there are any news in this regard, we will keep you updated here.
Black Knight Season 2 plot: What could happen next?
Caution: There are spoilers to “Black Knight”
In terms of content, the plot of “Black Knight” seems to be fundamentally complete, as at the end of the series, 5-8 (Kim Woo-bin) succeeds in stopping the evil plans of Ryu Seok (Song Seung-heon), the heir to the Chunmyung corporation, to exterminate the refugees and his heinous experiments, and Ryu Seok dies. The brutal class system in Seoul is shattered and the president (Jin Kyung) promises to improve the oxygen distribution system and the air pollution also seems to decrease. However, even after the ending, some interesting questions remain unanswered and point to possible storylines for a sequel.
First, there is the possibility that Ryu Seok might have survived the explosion after all and consequently plots revenge against 5-8 and the other Black Knights. Also, more about the mutants’ characteristics and abilities could be told in season 2. It would also be interesting to see to what extent the new, fairer social system can hold up and what new problems might arise for the people on the Korean peninsula. At the end of Season 1, the refugees are eventually relocated to District A. In addition, the reforms are intended to provide a more equitable life without discrimination. Despite improving living conditions, the people are still dependent on the Black Knights, which is why further narrative threads could also be possible around their work. In the process, Sa-Wol could possibly guide a new generation of couriers.
The good news is that the Black Knight series is based on the popular webtoon called Delivery Knight by Lee Yoon-kyun. Due to the rather loose adaptation, it is not possible to directly infer a possible plot for the sequel, however, the popularity of the webtoon speaks to a potentially large fan base for the Netflix series and also opens up numerous other possibilities for further story development. A second “Black Knight” season is also likely to be exciting.
