“Avatar: The Way of Water” is still running in theaters, but “Avatar 3” is already approaching and awaits us in December 2024. All information on the Pandora sequels by James Cameron can be found at The Monster Hype.
Although “Avatar: The Way of Water” only ran for two weeks in 2022, it already managed to become the most successful film of the year during this time. In 2023, the success story continued, so no one doubts that James Cameron will be allowed to film his Pandora five-parter in its entirety.
The story continues with “Avatar 3”, which is rumored to be called “Avatar: The Seed Bearer”, but this title has not yet been confirmed. What we already know about the next “Avatar” sequel, however, is revealed to you by The Monster Hype.
Avatar 3: Release date
At the moment, the start date for “Avatar 3” is December 18, 2024. Whether this remains the case remains to be seen, as James Cameron never shies away from postponing his films.
However, since “Avatar 3” is already almost shot, there should be nothing standing in the way of a theatrical release in 2024. The situation is different with the dates for parts 4 and 5, which are probably more of a placeholder.
Avatar 3: Production
In December 2022, producer Jon Landau revealed that 95% of “Avatar 3” has already been shot. The first act of “Avatar 4” has also already been shot, so that the young actors in all films look the same age. In part 4, a time jump of 6 years follows, so James Cameron can take his time with the shooting of the remaining scenes and of “Avatar 5”.
If you are wondering why “Avatar 3” is not already released in December 2023, you have to consider that the shooting itself is only a small part of the production. Post-production, i.e. the animation of the characters and of Pandora, will now take a lot of time – especially if James Cameron, as a perfectionist, demands particularly much from his animation team.
Avatar 3: Plot
The plot of “Avatar 3” continues to be a mystery, though we do know that there were supposed to be 4 “Avatar” movies until the extensive script for Part 2 was split. “Avatar 3” is thus actually just the second half of part 2. Miles Quaritch is expected to return as the antagonist in all further “Avatar” films, and the family of Jake Sully and Neytiri will of course continue to be the focus.
With the so-called “Ash People” we can expect a new Na’vi tribe that will not be as benevolent as the Metkayina and the Omatikaya.
While we don’t know who will be bearing the aforementioned seed (my money’s on the immaculately conceived Kiri) Cameron has stated we’ll be meeting another tribe of Na’vi, and they’ll be centered around fire. “Fire has a symbolic purpose in the film and there’s a culture that is specifically around that concept,” Cameron told Deadline at the Critics Choice Awards. “That’s probably saying too much as we speak.” However, he continued: “You’re going to meet two completely new cultures in the next film. We met the Omaticaya, we met the Metkayina, and you’re going to meet two new cultures in the next film, and it kind of rove a little more freely around the world of Pandora to different places.”
David Thewlis, Michelle Yeoh and Oona Chaplin will take over still unknown roles in “Avatar 3”. In addition, there were rumors that Vin Diesel will be in one of the upcoming films. However, these were refuted by producer Jon Landau.
Avatar 3: Trailer
There is no trailer for “Avatar 3” yet. If you stick roughly to the marketing schedule of “Avatar 2”, we should expect the first teaser trailer just under 7 months before the theatrical release, so in May 2024. The real trailers can then be expected from October 2024.
Avatar 3: The sequels
While the plot of “Avatar – Departure to Pandora” would have worked as a standalone story, parts 2-5 contain cross-plot elements. In part 5, the all-decisive battle for the fate of Pandora probably awaits us.
However, director James Cameron assures us that every upcoming “Avatar” movie will also have its own story with a clear beginning and end, so we don’t have to expect multiple unsatisfying cliffhangers.
Besides the confirmed time jump from part 4, we already know that the action in “Avatar 5” will be shifted to Earth, where Neytiri gets a whole new impression of humanity.
