BROOKLYN, NY – A Space Gallery proudly announces “After Waking from a Dream,” an ambitious solo exhibition by an establishing installation artist whose work has been making waves across the contemporary art scene. Opening February 1 through February 5, 2025, this exhibition will present an unprecedented exploration of fantasy, dreams, and psychological reality through large-scale installations.
The artist, a BFA graduate from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, has rapidly established herself as an innovative voice and accomplished figure in contemporary installation art. The upcoming exhibition will feature two major installations that promise to revolutionize the gallery space through their innovative use of materials and psychological depth. The first installation, titled “Sweet Dreams,” will transform the gallery entrance into an immersive, womb-like environment. Utilizing cotton and precisely engineered wire frameworks, this piece will create a translucent, cocoon-like passage that visitors must traverse to enter the exhibition space. The installation’s form draws from psychoanalytic theory, particularly focusing on the concept of maternal separation and the resulting psychological compensations.
The cotton material, chosen for its simultaneously protective and permeable qualities, will be manipulated to create varying degrees of opacity, symbolizing the fluid boundary between conscious and unconscious states. The wire framework, meticulously designed to create organic, flowing forms, will provide both structural support and symbolic representation of the psychological frameworks that shape human experience. LED lighting elements will be integrated throughout the structure, creating subtle gradients that shift with visitor movement, further enhancing the immersive experience.
The second installation, “Nightmare,” will present a striking exploration of collective trauma through an innovative combination of sugar, gelatin, and PEVA materials. This wall-mounted piece, measuring approximately 15 feet in width, will feature a series of wound-like formations housing faceless gummy bear forms. The work draws inspiration from Lacanian psychoanalysis, examining how individuals navigate between desire and social constraints in contemporary society.
The technical execution of “Nightmare” will involve a groundbreaking approach to material manipulation. The artist has developed a proprietary technique for creating stable, semi-transparent forms using food-grade materials, allowing for unprecedented structural possibilities while maintaining conceptual integrity. The installation will incorporate precise temperature and humidity controls to ensure the stability of these unique materials throughout the exhibition period.
The exhibition stems from extensive research into psychoanalytic theory, particularly focusing on the works of Jacques Lacan and Sigmund Freud. The artist’s interpretation of these theories through physical form demonstrates an exceptional ability to translate complex psychological concepts into tangible, experiential art. This theoretical foundation is evidenced in both the material choices and spatial arrangements of the installations.
The artist’s sophisticated approach has garnered significant recognition, including Special Recognition and 4th Place awards from Light Space & Time Art Gallery in Santa Fe, multiple Honorable Mention Awards from Teravarna Art Gallery in Los Angeles, and features in prestigious art publications including “Al-Tiba9” magazine. Her work uniquely bridges Eastern and Western artistic traditions, informed by her experience as a former Graphic Designer at Analog Studio in Shanghai and her current position in New York’s contemporary art scene.
