There were rumors for some time, now it is sad certainty: “Yellowstone” ends already with the current 5th season. How the story of the Duttons continues afterwards on Paramount+.

  • “Yellowstone” continues to be an international series success, yet the Western hit is already ending with season 5.
  • The reason for this is Kevin Costner’s wish not to be in front of the camera as often for the series.
  • However, a spin-off with Matthew McConaughey has already been confirmed.
"Yellowstone" canceled: Paramount confirms the end after season 5

“Yellowstone” without Kevin Costner as John Dutton is not possible – that’s what not only numerous fans of the Paramount+ series think, but also Paramount itself. This explains why the successful Western series will now come to an end after the current 5th season, as Deadline confirms.

Already in recent months, there have been repeated reports about problems behind the scenes. Costner was reportedly not satisfied with his shooting times, while series creator Taylor Sheridan insisted that Costner, as the star of the series, should also be seen in the episodes accordingly often.

Such disagreements ensured that so far only the first half of the 5th season of “Yellowstone” could be filmed and aired. This situation was also unfortunate for the other stars of “Yellowstone”, since they never knew when they would be called back to the set.

As things stand, the remaining episodes are scheduled to be filmed from August 2023 and broadcast from November. However, it is not yet certain whether Costner will return at all for these final episodes, whether his role will have to be reduced, or whether the scripts will still have to be written or adapted.

Indeed, the ongoing writers’ strike currently makes it impossible to write or revise new scripts, which is why the final episodes from Season 5 could be delayed even further. One thing is for sure: In the best case we have 6 episodes left with Costner as John Dutton.

On with Matthew McConaughey

Paramount, however, does not want to do without the cash cow called “Yellowstone” and has therefore announced another spin-off, this time with Matthew McConaughey in the leading role. Nothing is known about the plot yet, but it is suspected that the spin-off will directly follow the end of “Yellowstone”, which means that numerous actors from the main series could simply move over to the spin-off.

The end of “Yellowstone” would thus really just be the end of John Dutton’s story and thus of Kevin Costner himself, who was still clearly behind the series at the beginning, but in recent years has wanted to invest less and less time in the series. The question remains whether fans of the series will accept Matthew McConaughey as Costner’s replacement.

You can currently watch the first 4 seasons of “Yellowstone” on Paramount+, and the 8 episodes from season 5 that have been released so far can be seen on Amazon Prime Video.
