“Shazam! Fury of the Gods” or Shazam 2 is failing in theaters. Now there are first indications that the latest DC movie will be released in streaming as early as April 2023.

- However, the flop could mean that the movie will be released surprisingly early in the stream.

DC has failed to develop an effective formula for success for its own superhero movies in recent years, which is why James Gunn has now been tasked with taking command and putting the wobbly ship back on a safe course. “Shazam!” was well received in 2019, however, so DC and Warner Bros. were hoping that the sequel, Shazam! Fury of the Gods, one of the last films from the “old” DC universe, would also find its audience.
Now, just a week after its theatrical release, a disappointing result is emerging. Director David F. Sandberg is surprised at the lack of interest, while lead actor Zachary Levi blames poor marketing, saying Shazam 2 was not adequately advertised as a film for the whole family.
But perhaps it’s also due to the aimlessness of the current DC films that superhero fans aren’t flocking to theaters. Going to the movies early used to be a must if you didn’t want internet spoilers to catch important events from the film, but the new Shazam 2 may not have an impact on DC’s future. That’s not to say the film can’t be fun, but it also feels more expendable, so many viewers may be waiting for a streaming release.
Apparently, they won’t have to wait long for that, as recently “Shazam! Fury of the Gods” is already listed as a streaming release on amazon for April 18, 2023. This means that only 39 days would pass between the theatrical and home release – an extremely short time span that shows how little confidence Warner has in the box office results in the coming weeks.
It is not yet known where Amazon got this date from, Warner itself has not yet announced the digital purchase release. So it could be that this date will be pushed back even further, especially since Amazon has since removed the date again.
