Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is Netflix’s next anime venture based on a video game template. Can we expect season 2 or has the story already been told to the end?
Video game adaptations don’t necessarily have to be doomed to failure. While there are titles that were so grotty that you would prefer to forget them, some series and movies prove otherwise. Netflix, for example, was able to win over even the hard core of the gaming community with the anime film The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf and the League of Legends series Arcane. The streaming giant’s latest prank is also very well received there.
We’re talking about Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, a new anime series based on the science fiction video game of the same name. Studio Trigger and even the developers of Cyberpunk 2077 were personally involved in the production. Whether there will be a 2nd season is still unclear at the moment.
What Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is about?
The series centers on David, who grew up as a street kid in Night City. He wants to become an “Edgerunner”, the ultimate mercenary, at any cost. To achieve this, he has himself equipped with cyber implants and modifications. These make him much stronger, but also involve a great risk.
He is always in danger of losing everything – including his mind – due to a cyberpsychosis. On his way to becoming Night City’s best edgerunner, David encounters dangerous opponents, unscrupulous corporations and surprising allies. In the end, he must decide what is truly important in his life.
Is Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Season 2 coming?
So far it is not known if Cyberpunk: Edgerunners will get a 2nd season. Netflix is probably waiting for feedback from viewers. If the series is well received, then the streaming giant could commission further episodes. The first reviews are already extremely positive: on IMDb, the anime currently has a rating of 8.7/10.
Unfortunately, it looks like the plot of the series leaves little room for a sequel. All questions are answered for the most part and there are no nasty cliffhangers either. Netflix doesn’t seem to have planned a 2nd season in advance. Hopefully, we will find out in the coming months whether the streaming service will produce new episodes.
