It all started when Finan’s wife Ingrith had a prophetic dream that seven kings and the woman you love must die before England can be united. Uhtred, being Uhtred, brushed it off because he didn’t have a lover at the time. But when King Edward kicked the bucket, Finan declared that he was the first king down and that there were six more to go.
Of course, not everyone believed in this prophecy. One of the kings on the council dismissed it, claiming that killing a king would just lead to another taking his place. After all, they all had children who would carry on their legacies.

In the grand tradition of showrunners refusing to just give us a straight answer, The Last Kingdom and Seven Kings Must Die executive producer Nigel Marchant told Decider, “You’re going to have to make your own call on that.” Gee, thanks for nothing, Nigel. However, Marchant did confirm that the show’s final shot shows the fortress at Bebbanburg still standing today, albeit with some modern renovations.
