For all those who can’t get enough of Peter Sutherland, there is good news. Netflix has given the green light for The Night Agent season 2.
While phone service may have come to an end for Peter Sutherland (Gabriel Basso), his career as a Night Agent is probably just picking up steam: With 168.7 streaming hours in the first few days and a Netflix top 10 ranking in 93 countries, the series advanced to the third-best season 1 start for a Netflix original at the streaming giant. For Netflix, that’s reason enough to commission “The Night Agent” Season 2 just a week after the series launched (via Deadline).
Until the new episodes start on Netflix, you can enjoy the underlying novel “The Night Agent” by Matthew Quirk – but only in English.
When will The Night Agent season 2 released on Netflix?
Netflix usually waits a little longer before deciding a sequel. With “The Night Agent” this was probably not necessary due to the wave of success, because Peter Sutherland conquered not only the heart of Rose (Luciane Buchanan), but also that of the viewers*: In 93 countries, the FBI agent fought his way into the top 10 and took pole position in most cases. In Germany, “The Night Agent” even overtook popular series like “Shadow & Bone” and “Liebe macht blind”. Accordingly, Netflix gave the official “go” for new episodes just one week after the streaming launch. However, there is no fixed start date yet. Since it usually takes about a year before new episodes see the light of day in the streaming world, we expect “The Night Agent” season 2 to start in early 2024.
Showrunner Shawn Ryan expressed his delight to Deadline about the season extension:
“The tremendous response to the series is a great pleasure and a credit to our casts, our writerss, our directorss, our crew and our partnerss at Sony Pictures Television and Netflix. We couldn’t be more proud and excited to kick off Season 2 and share new Night Action adventures with our newfound fans.”
The Night Agent Ending Explained: What could happen next?
In the first season’s final episode, Peter finally receives the long-awaited answers. But that’s not all: he gets an offer he can’t refuse, and in the last scene, he sets off on an unknown mission. Before that, he says goodbye to Rose Larkin, to whom he promises to get in touch as soon as possible. He then boards the plane and waits until he has left US airspace. Then he unlocks the tablet on which all the information about his next assignment is stored. What exactly this is all about remains hidden from the audience. The only certain thing is that Peter Sutherland has to complete a mission abroad.
He may have to team up with Chelsea Arrington (Fola Evans-Akingbola), because she is also back on duty after the tragic events of the first season. Meanwhile, what happens next for Rose remains to be seen. However, she is certainly not likely to wait silently and idly for Peter’s return. Instead, she will resume her dreams in Silicon Valley.
First ideas for The Night Agent Season 2 already exist
In 2019, Matthew Quirk revealed in an interview with Criminal Element that he had ideas for a new story around Peter and Rose. Although no book sequel has been published to date, he may implement his idea in season 2 – after all, he is not only the author of the underlying novel, but also co-executive producer of the series (via IMDb).
Showrunner Shawn Ryan also mentioned to Deadline that he has new stories in mind. He hasn’t revealed what they will look like yet, but they will definitely have an ending – much like Season 1:
“I certainly have some ideas, but I want to keep them to myself until the time is right. What I can say is that the original plan […] was that each season would tell its own, largely self-contained story, with a beginning, middle and end. […] I want […] to give the audience some satisfaction that they get to see how things turn out.”
According to Ryan, The Night Agent Season 2 will answer the following questions in the process (via Deadline):
“What does it mean that Peter becomes a Night Agent? Where is he going to go? And now that Rose is going back to California to restart her career as a tech, what does that mean for Peter and Rose?”
The Night Agent Season 2 Cast: Who’s in it?
According to Deadline, Ryan also emphasized that not all characters from the previous episodes would return in each season. However, Netflix is unlikely to forgo a reunion with Gabriel Basso, aka Peter Sutherland. Luciane Buchanan and Fola Evans-Akingbola are also likely to be seen in at least minor roles. It should also be clear that The Night Agent Season 2 will not lack action.
