To understand the opening of season 3 of The Mandalorian, you need to have seen another Star Wars series. Here’s everything you need to know about the important connection to The Book of Boba Fett.

Attention, spoilers follow!

Yesterday, the 3rd season of The Mandalorian started on Disney+. Din Djarin and Baby Yoda are back for new adventures in the Star Wars universe. Wait, Baby Yoda? Didn’t the bounty hunter part ways with his charge at the end of Season 2, leaving little Grogu in the care of Luke Skywalker?

Yes, your memories are not deceiving you. When The Mandalorian went on a long hiatus in December 2021, the two most important characters of the series went their separate ways. But how did they get back together? The answer to this question is hidden in another Star Wars series: The Book of Boba Fett.

Star Wars confusion: What does The Book of Boba Fett have to do with The Mandalorian and Baby Yoda?

The Book of Boba Fett is a spin-off that came out of the 2nd season of The Mandalorian and picks up many elements of the story. Basically, we’re not dealing with a standalone series, but a hybrid of spin-off, prequel and sequel to The Mandalorian.

Although a majority of the seven episodes of The Book of Boba Fett focus on the fate of the title character, three chapters also turn their gaze to the main characters of The Mandalorian: Din and Grogu. In chapters 5, 6 and 7 we learn how the two of them got back together after their breakup.

The 5th episode of The Book of Boba Fett shows Din dejectedly roaming the galaxy. That he misses Grogu is clear in every scene. In the 6th episode, he goes to the planet where Baby Yoda is being trained as a Jedi by Luke Skywalker. Din brings him a gift: a chain mail shirt made of Beskar.

In The Book of Boba Fett, Baby Yoda had to choose between Din Djarin and Luke Skywalker

Luke presents his padawan with a tricky decision: either Grogu chooses the late Yoda’s lightsaber and continues his training. Or he chooses the chainmail and returns to Din. After a cliffhanger, the 7th episode brings the resolution: Grogu returns to his Mando dad.

This is where we pick up with the 3rd season of The Mandalorian. Din and Grogu are reunited. Jon Favreau, who is the creative mind behind both projects, already emphasized that his Star Wars series are very closely connected. That should also be exciting with regard to Ahsoka, which launches on Disney+ later this year.
