The movie is about sisters Celie and Nettie Harris, who grew up together in the American South in the early 20th century. At a young age, Celie was raped by her father and had to watch him sell her children after they were born.

In addition, her father forced her to marry Albert “Mister” Johnson, who drove Nettie out of the house they shared and forbade her any contact with her sister.

Years passed, which Celie had to endure in her violent marriage, until she met the singer Shug Avery. Through the meeting with the remarkable woman, she decided to take her fate into her own hands and not let herself be bullied any longer.

The main role of the adult Celie is embodied by Fantasia Barrino (“Soul Kittens Cabaret”). She played this role in the Broadway musical back in 2007, after taking it over from LaChanze (“Gossip Girl (2021)”), who won a Tony Award for her performance in 2006. The younger version of Celie features Phylicia Pearl Mpasi (“Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies”).

Celie’s little sister Nettie is played by singer Ciara (“The Chaos Dad”). Her younger version is played by “Arielle the Mermaid” star Halle Bailey. Also starring in other roles are Taraji P. Henson (“Empire”) as Shug Avery, Danielle Brooks (“Peacemaker”) as Sofia, Colman Domingo (“Fear the Walking Dead“) as Mister, Corey Hawkins (“Survive”) as Harpo, H.E.R. (“Yes Day”) as Squeak and Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor (“61st Street”).

The Color Purple: Production

The movie is inspired by the Broadway play of the same name by Marsha Norman, Brenda Lee, Allee Willis and Stephen Bray. This is based on the best-selling 1982 novel “The Color Purple” by Alice Walker and is the second film adaptation of the story, which was first brought to the screen in 1985 by Steven Spielberg (“Indiana Jones and the Wheel of Destiny”).

Spielberg is also involved in the remake as a producer, as are Oprah Winfrey (“Queen Sugar”) and Quincy Jones (“The Color Purple”). The screenplay for “The Color Purple” is by Marcus Gardley, in collaboration with Alice Walker and Marsha Norman. The film is directed by Blitz Bazawule (“Black Is King”).
