Already since June 2021 it is certain that streaming service Netflix has ordered Shadow and Bone season 2. In the new episodes, the Sun Warrior Alina Starkov must face the fight against the Dark One and help the Grisha with her powers. Meanwhile, it is also known when the 2nd season starts at Netflix.
Shadow and Bone Season 2: Release Date
In December 2022, Netflix finally revealed that Shadow and Bone season 2 will be released on March 16, 2023. Along with this information, the streaming service also released several new images from the upcoming episodes.

Exactly one month before the start of the second season of “Shadow and Bone” Netflix has released a first trailer. In the new episodes, the danger from the Dark One (Ben Barnes) continues to come to a head. To stop the Shadow Corridor and Kirigan, Alina and Mal must come out of their exile and join forces with the Crows.
What will Shadow and Bone season 2 be about?
Season 2 will feature two books by author Leigh Bardugo: “Icy Waves” from the Grisha Trilogy and “Song of the Crows” from the Crow Trilogy.
In the Season 1 finale, Kirigan turns out to be the Black Heretic: he is the Dark One who created the Shadow Corridor centuries ago and divided the land of Ravka.
In the Shadow Corridor, a major confrontation occurs between Kirigian on one side and Alina, her childhood friend Mal (Archie Renaux), and the crows Kaz (Freddy Carter), Inej (Amita Suman), and Jesper (Kit Young), and the Air Summoner Zoya (Sujaya Dasgupta) on the other.
Kirigan seems defeated and killed at first, but the dark one is able to drag himself out of the shadow corridor badly injured – followed by Volkra, whom he is able to command without the hand signals common to the Grisha. Alina and Mal leave the land to go into hiding for the time being.
Alina will pursue the goal of eliminating the Shadow Corridor in Shadow and Bone season 2. First, however, she and Mal will take refuge in a foreign land to escape her numerous pursuers for the time being.
Alina actress Jessie Mei Li reveals regarding her character’s future, “[Alina] still has a long way to go.” At the same time, Alina will be “drawn to the dark side” in Season 2, as actress Mei Li revealed.
For General Kirigan, the Dark One, Season 2 will bring some changes: No longer will he be the leader of the 2nd Army. He has also forfeited his place in the hierarchy of the country of Ravka. At the same time, Kirigan has created a number of new enemies. So he is much more isolated than he was in season 1 of the Netflix show.
But the Dark One’s powers have also grown, as the epic season 1 finale makes clear. “He’s more or less all-powerful now,” reveals Kirigan actor Ben Barnes. “He just has to think something dark and it will happen.”
Here’s what we know from the books
The story of the crows should pick up tremendously in the upcoming installment of the Netflix series: If “Shadow and Bone” Season 2 follows the original novels by Leigh Bardugo, the Crows will try to infiltrate the Eistribunal in Fjerda, a military fortress of the Düskelle. From there, they plan to rescue the inventor of a drug shrouded in mystery.
Meanwhile, Alina allies herself with a privateer named Sturmhond. However, she has yet to learn that he has his own agenda. Together they want to find another force multiplier to arm Alina for the fight against the Dark One.
Cast of Shadow and Bone Season 2
All the main actors and actresses for season 2 of “Shadow and Bone” will most likely return.
So Jessie Mei Li (Alina), Ben Barnes (General Kirigan/the Dark One), Archie Renaux (Mal), Freddy Carter (Kaz Brekker), Amita Suman (Inej Ghafa) and Kit Young (Jesper Fahey) will be back.
In January 2022, the streaming service announced four new cast members for Shadow and Bone Season 2. Lewis Tan (“Mortal Kombat”), Jack Wolfe (“The Witcher”), Patrick Gibson (“The OA”) and Anna Leong Brophy (“Traces”) are joining the cast.
Gibson will play Nikolai Lantsov. Nikolai is a privateer hired by General Kirigan to find a mythical creature. This the Dark One intends to use as a force multiplier.
Tan will be seen as Tolya Yul-Bataar, an entherzer who is part of Nikolai’s crew and the twin brother of Tamar Kir-Bataar, played by Anna Leong Brophy. Wolfe will play the role of Wylan Hendriks. He will be part of the gang around leader Kaz Brekker and will act as the Crow’s blaster.
After a casting video surfaced, there is speculation that Toby Sebastian will take on the role of Stormhond. However, this has not yet been officially confirmed. Sebastian is known for his role of Trystane Martell in “Game of Thrones”.
Shadow and Bone Season 2: Production
Filming of the 2nd season of “Shadow and Bone” was officially completed in the summer of 2022. Once again, filming took place in the Hungarian capital of Budapest. Executive producer Josh Barry shared pictures from the city during the shoot and revealed that an important week is ahead for everyone.
