The meaning behind the episode titles

“Shadow and Bone” co-showrunner Eric Heisserer himself explains how the names for the episodes came about and what’s behind them. The first episode starts with the title “No Shelter but Me”. This is a line from the 3rd volume of the “Grisha” series “Blazing Wings”.
“No Shelter but Me” is a good description of the fact that both Alina and Mal and our crows find themselves without allies and in pretty big trouble.

Because even though the crows and Alina are initially separated in Season 2, their stories run parallel to each other in the series. They will continue to be connected. The title of the 2nd episode, and presumably the 3rd, will likely deal with the sea serpent Rusalye and Alina’s plan to take action against it.
The title of the 5th and 6th episodes are proverbs of the Shu Han. Translated into German, they mean something like “Despise your heart” and “I have no heart”.
In these two episodes, we probably get to see the Shu Han territory for the first time or learn more about Alina’s Shu heritage. Episode 7 “Meet You in the Meadow” and episode 8 “No Funerals” reference lines that were mentioned repeatedly in season 1.
“Meet You in the Meadow” and “I’ll Meet You in the Meadow,” respectively, are what Alina says to Mal when they were children growing up together in the orphanage. However, even in her adult years, Alina says this phrase to her boyfriend. So it’s very likely that episode 7 will focus on Mal and Alina’s relationship.
“No Funerals,” on the other hand, is a reference to the Crow’s mantra “No wailers. No Funerals.” Heisserer hinted that this title alludes to Alina and Mal’s reunion with the Crows at the end of the second season of “Shadow and Bone.”
Whether it will be a positive or negative clash, however, remains to be seen. The 2nd season “Shadow and Bone” starts on March 16 on Netflix.
