The new Netflix series shows the emergence and background of the opioid crisis in the United States. It focuses on the events surrounding Purdue Pharma and CEO Richard Sackler, as well as the horrific consequences of the development of the painkiller OxyContin.

The six-part miniseries will launch on August 10, 2023 on streaming giant Netflix.
Painkiller: Plot
The so-called opioid crisis originated in the late 1990s in the United States and shows the effects of the increasing abuse of opioid painkillers. The series takes a closer look at the background of the crisis through various characters.
At the center is the head of Purdue Pharma, Richard Sackler, embodied by Matthew Broderick. He wants to make his new painkiller OxyContin the market leader. But as time goes on, it becomes clear that the drug is highly addictive. Investigator Edie (Uzo Aduba) is hot on the heels of Sackler and Purdue Pharma.
Painkiller: Cast
In addition to Matthew Broderick as Richard Sackler and Uzo Aduba as Edie, the film also stars West Duchovny as Shannon Schaeffer and Dina Shihabi as Britt Hufford.
Other roles will include Taylor Kitsch (as family man Glen Kryger), Ana Cruz Kayne (as young attorney Brianna Ortiz), Tyler Ritter (as John Brownlee) and John Ales (as Dr. Gregory Fitzgibbons).
Also joining the cast will be “Lost” actor Sam Anderson (as Raymond Sackler, co-founder of Purdue Pharma), Carolina Bartczak (as Glen’s wife Lily Kryger), “The Society” actor Jack Mulhern (as Glen’s stepson Tyler Kryger) and Ron Lea (as attorney Bill Havens).

Painkiller: Production
Eric Newman (known as showrunner for “Narcos” and “Narcos Mexico” among others) serves as executive producer, while Micah Fitzerman-Blue and Noah Harpster are responsible for the script and also serve as showrunners and producers. Peter Berg will serve as executive director. Writers Patrick Radden Keefe and Barry Meier are serving as consultants to the “Painkiller” team.
