“How I Met Your Father” and “Lizzie McGuire” couldn’t be more alike. So it’s perfect that the two sitcoms are getting an unexpected crossover in How I Met Your Father Season 2.
- Currently, the 2nd season of the “How I Met Your Mother” spin-off “How I Met Your Father” is airing in the US on the streaming service Hulu.
- The 7th episode of the new season features an unexpected guest appearance.
- In a flashback from Sophie’s life, we see a scene from the 2000 teen series “Lizzie McGuire”.
Blonde hair, sassy sayings and always lots of drama. Sophie from “How I Met Your Father” and Lizzie from “Lizzie McGuire” have more than just that in common. The unmistakable smile of both women belongs to one and the same person: actress Hilary Duff. So can you imagine a better crossover than between the two sitcoms? No? Neither can we.
In the 7th episode of How I Met Your Father season 2, Lizzie pays a visit to the new Hulu series. As Sophie and her friends talk about their worst Valentine’s Day experience, a flashback occurs that isn’t re-enacted by a 13-year-old teenage Sophie as initially expected.
Instead, we see the real teen Hilary Duff in a scene from the 2000s teen series “Lizzie McGuire.” Shown is the first episode of How I Met Your Father season 2, “The First Kiss.” In the episode, Lizzie experiences her first love, first kiss, and first heartbreak with paperboy Ronnie.
The idea to offer “Lizzie McGuire” a guest appearance in “How I Met Your Father” was not only well received by fans of the series. Hilary Duff was also immediately enthusiastic, as showrunners Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger revealed in an interview with TV-Line magazine.
The idea came from the episode’s writer Amy-Jo Perry, and then we very quickly did a meeting with Hilary via text message and asked, “What do you think about it?” She was immediately on board. Hilary thinks it’s funny. She didn’t hesitate for a second. Then it was a matter of going through episodes and saying, “What’s a great, dramatic, angsty moment in middle school?”
It’s a nice tribute to the start of Hilary Duff’s career at Disney and a nice reminder of the teen classic. But it’s also a bit of a small, but also not quite enough, redemption after the planned “Lizzie McGuire” reboot was cancelled again.
A large part of the old cast was supposed to return for this one, but after Disney still gave the project the green light in the summer of 2019, the plans were quickly put on hold again. A year later, Duff signed on for the role of Sophie on “How I Met Your Father.”
