Netflix is currently working on the production of the live-action adaptation of the famous video game “Gears of War”. The project is to be launched together with the game’s developer The Coalition and will be based on the game’s story. The first member of the production team has already been announced. This is none other than “Dune” co-author Jon Spaihts, who is to be involved in “Gears of War” as a screenwriter.
“Gears of War” first hit the market in 2006 as an Xbox game and has already received 5 expansions. With over 40 million copies sold, it is a very popular game among gamers.
The video game is about a society on the brink of extinction, fighting against the all-powerful alien threat Locust on the planet Sera. On the front lines of this war is a disgraced soldier named Marcus Fenix, who leads the so-called Delta Squad to save humanity.
In Hollywood, a film adaptation of the game has been under discussion for quite some time. Most recently, Universal in 2016 and a few years ago New Line had plans to film the story. However, nothing came of it.
Streaming service Netflix now delivers more concrete plans and with such a renowned screenwriter on board, the production is promising. The fact that there are already six games in the game series could also point to several films.
Spaihts has also helped write the sci-fi hit “Passengers” and the Marvel film “Doctor Strange,” in addition to parts 1 and 2 of “Dune.” The sequel to “Dune” is scheduled for release in U.S. theaters on Nov. 03, 2023.
