Create a Windows Installation USB Flash Drive
A Windows installation USB flash drive is useful in many ways: it allows you to install Windows on a new computer, upgrade a PC to a new version of Windows, repair Windows or even reset Windows.

Warning: all data on your USB flash drive will be deleted. Be sure to make a copy of your files before proceeding!
Note: We will create a UEFI-compatible Windows installation USB flash drive only by skipping the UEFI+BIOS hybrid feature of the Windows ISO image. Why this choice? To make your life easier if you want to install Windows only in UEFI mode! This is because with a UEFI+BIOS hybrid USB flash drive, it can be difficult for inexperienced users to know if the Windows installer was booted in UEFI mode or in legacy BIOS mode since the USB drive can be booted into both modes when the computer boots. With a UEFI USB flash drive, you are guaranteed to install Windows in UEFI mode and not in legacy BIOS mode.
If you want to enable the UEFI+BIOS hybrid feature, press the Alt + E keys in Rufus at the same time.
- Insert your USB flash drive into a USB port on your PC.
- Open the Rufus software by double-clicking the rufus.exe file.
- In Rufus, select the following options:
- Device: your USB flash drive
- Boot type: Disk image or ISO
- Click the SELECT button and select the Windows ISO
- Partition scheme: GPT
- File system: FAT32 (if available) or NTFS (requires disabling Secure Boot)
- Allocation unit size: Default
- Click the START button to start creating the Windows installation USB flash drive.
- Confirm the creation of the USB flash drive by clicking OK. Attention, all the data present on the USB key will be permanently erased.
- Wait for the copy of the ISO files to finish.
- That’s it, your Windows installation USB key has been created!
Now you have a Bootable Windows 7 USB flash drive.
Clean Install Windows 7 ISO
1. Insert your Windows 7 Installation USB flash drive into your PC and start your PC.
2. While booting, before the Windows logo, tap the Boot Menu key to open it.

3. Boot your PC from the installation USB flash drive/DVD instead of booting to the system disc as usual.
4. Press a key to launch the Windows 7 installer.
5. Choose Language and other preferences and click Next.
6. Click the Install Now button.
7. Accept the terms of the license agreement.
8. Choose Custom (advanced option).
9. The Windows 7 installer displays all partitions on all disks on your computer.
10. Identify the system disk, the one on which Windows 7 is installed. In the screenshot above, it is disk 0 (we find the partitions specific to Windows 7).
11. Now, the goal is to locate the partitions corresponding to Windows 7.
→ If Windows 7 is installed in BIOS mode, you have two partitions:
- A System Reserved partition, of type System.
- A Windows partition, of type Primary.
12. In this tutorial, we will start from scratch, that is, remove everything and then reinstall Windows 7. To do this, start by deleting the two or three partitions corresponding to Windows 7. To do this, for each partition:
13. Select the partition, Click Delete confirm the deletion of the partition.
14. Create the partitions needed for Windows 7 to work by selecting the unallocated space > New > Apply. Confirm the creation of the additional partitions.
15. Verify that the new “Primary” partition is selected and then click Next to start the Windows 7 installation.
16. Wait while Windows 7 is installed.
17. When all this setup is completed, Windows will reboot a couple of times automatically. After this, Windows will detect and install drivers and it will restart for the last time.
This completes the final step of your clean install of Windows 7. Congratulations!
