During the 2023 Academy Awards, streaming service Disney+ unveiled its new action-packed comic book adaptation. The series, starring Oscar winners Michelle Yeoh and Ke Huy Quan, is set to launch on the streamer in spring 2023.

With an action-packed trailer, streaming service Disney+ unveiled its new series “American Born Chinese” as part of the Oscars 2023. In the new series, Oscar winner Michelle Yeoh reunites with several fellow actors from “Everything Everywhere All At Once.”

American Born Chinese: Plot

This Disney+ series tells the story of high school senior Jin Wang, who must balance his life at school with his personal life. When a foreign student transfers to his high school, two worlds collide and Jin unwittingly becomes involved in a battle between gods of Chinese mythology.

The main cast of “American Born Chinese” includes leading man Ben Wang (“Chang Can Dunk”) as Jin Wang, Oscar winners Michelle Yeoh (“Everything Everywhere All At Once”) as Guanyin, Ke Huy Quan (“Loki”) as Freddy Wong, Yeo Yann Yann (“King of Musang King”) as Christine Wang, Chin Han (“Mortal Kombat”) as Simon Wang, Daniel Wu (“Westworld”) as Sun Wukong, Jim Liu (“Light the Night”) as Wei-Chen and Sydney Taylor (“Just Add Magic: Mystery City”) as Amelia.

Also starring are Stephanie Hsu (“Poker Face”) as Shiji Niangniang, Poppy Liu (“The Afterparty”) as Princess Iron Fan, Rosalie Chiang (“Red”) as Suzy Nakamura, James Hong (“Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai”) as Jade Emperor, Lisa Lu (“General Hospital”) as Ni Yang, Ronny Chieng (“Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings”) as Ji Gong, Jimmy O. Yang (“Silicon Valley”) as Dragon King Ao Guang and Leonard Wu (“Magnum P.I.”) as Niu Mowang.

“American Born Chinese” is based on the graphic novel by “Avatar – The Lord of the Elements” writer Gene Luen Yang. Series creators Charles and Kelvin Yu (“Here and Now,” “Bob’s Burgers”) serve as showrunners and executive producers. “Shang-Chi” director Destin Daniel Cretton directs and executive produces along with Melvin Mar (“Fresh Off the Boat”), Jake Kasdan (“New Girl”), Erin O’Malley (“Single Parents”), Asher Goldstein (“Just Mercy”) and Gene Luen Yang.
