“Willow” celebrated its big comeback in 2023. But what began with a great cry of jubilation now has an abrupt end. 35 years after the film by Lucasfilm, the adventure no longer continues.
- With the Disney+ series “Willow”, the popular Nelwyn Willow Ufgood returned to the screens.
- Based on the 1988 film of the same name, the series was meant to continue telling his story.
- But now Willow’s adventure has ended prematurely, after just one season.
It was supposed to be the comeback of the year, but now the dream of a series is over. After one season. Because just two months after the finale of Season 1, the reboot series of the 1988 fantasy film has been canceled.
The news comes as a surprise and somehow not. The Disney+ series was comparatively well received by fans. But it mainly reached fans of the 35-year-old film and not the young audience that the streaming service actually wanted to address. As a result, the series was unable to attract the audience figures it had hoped for.
Especially in the current times, however, this is particularly important with Disney+. Currently, Lucasfim, the studio behind the fantasy series, is looking at new ways to enrich their successful “Star Wars” universe with new live-action movies and series. There seems to be no room or resources for “Willow”.
Currently, Disney’s in-house streaming service is very keen to check its streaming content for profitability. “Willow” was not the first series to fall victim to this test and was canceled after only a few seasons. So there will be no further episodes of “Y: The Last Man” either. The science fiction series was also canceled after only one season.
There were still big plans for the story around Nelwyn Willow Ufgood. The series is set 16 years after the action of the film and tells of six heroes who embark on a dangerous quest. At the end of the 8th episodes, some questions remain unanswered for the time being.
The first season of “Willow” launched on Disney+ on November 30, 2022. The grand finale was released on January 11, 2023.
